Respirable crystalline silica (RCS) is one of the most serious — and least visible — hazards in Australian workplaces. When materials containing silica are cut, drilled, ground or crushed, they release microscopic dust particles that can travel deep into the lungs and cause permanent damage. Unlike many workplace hazards, the effects of silica exposure are often irreversible, making prevention the only effective form of protection.

This online Silica Awareness course provides practical, easy-to-understand knowledge on how to identify and manage the risks of RCS exposure. It covers what silica is, the health hazards associated with exposure, the everyday products and materials that contain it, the tasks most likely to generate hazardous dust, and the control measures — engineering, work practice and PPE — that reduce exposure risk.

The course is suitable for anyone working in construction, mining, transport, manufacturing, dentistry, artistry and any other industry where exposure to natural silica or engineered stone benchtops may occur. It is a non-accredited awareness course designed to build practical understanding and is not a substitute for a nationally accredited unit where one is specifically required by your state or territory regulator.
